Obituary for Bishop Jeremiah Reed

Presiding Bishop Emeritus Jeremiah Reed

Presiding Bishop Emeritus Jeremiah Reed, the son of Deacon Lewis Reed and Mother Christana Germany Reed, was born March 20, 1930 in Nuyaka, Oklahoma. Bishop Reed answered the call of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on March 15, 2018, at his residence in Des Moines, IA, at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 25 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Mildred Odessa Reed Jordan, Queen Ester Reed, Mary Opal Belton, Rachel Woods and Betty Ross; one brother, Sylvester Reed; and one son, Deacon Michael Gerald Reed.

Bishop Jeremiah Reed served in the army during the Korean War and received 3 bronze stars for service and achieved the rank of colonel. Returning home from service, Colonel Jeremiah Reed married his God-given soul-mate, Miss Willie Mae Wilson, on August 2, 1953. From this love-at-first-sight union, they were blessed with four children, three sons and a daughter.

He was saved in Des Moines, IA under the pastorage of the late District Elder Johnnie Waits, then moved to Omaha, NE in the early 1960’s and became a faithful member of Greater Bethlehem Temple under the pastorage of the late District Elder James P. Foster. In November of 1969, he was sent by God to begin his pastoral ministry in Des Moines, IA. He was pastor and teacher at Calvary Church of God on E. 18th Street, and due to the vast growth of the congregation, he built Christ Apostolic Temple, Inc. located at 1235 Sampson St. in 1975. In addition to the continued growth of the congregation, he built the present edifice located at 1230 E. 17th St.

Within his full pastoral ministry he developed several community programs, including the Eastside Community Substance Abuse Center, a youth offender program, food pantry, and prison ministries. Bishop Reed was a true people person. He assisted many families with housing, rent, food, financial support, vehicles and employment. Additionally, his evangelistic ministry consisted of starting, supporting and building several churches nationally and internationally. He supplied food, laptops, equipment, and vehicles for international churches. Impoverished villages were provided generators for lighting and dug several wells for water.

Bishop and Mother Reed are the founders of the following: Christ Apostolic Temple, Inc. Fellowship Organization; Christ Apostolic Temple, Inc.; Apostolic Oneness Network (television station), and the JW Reed Christian Academy. Bishop Reed was a vigilant pastor, father, teacher and preacher. Diligent and steadfast in his bible studies, Bishop Reed, received Doctorates of Divinity, Philosophy and Theology. A published author of several Christian books, his ministry touched the lives of thousands locally, but also reached billions more through the Apostolic Oneness Network television station, around the world.

In his spare time, he loved watching Westerns and current news events on T.V. Bishop was comical and loved making people laugh. He had a special love for young people, but his number one goal was to facilitate God’s people to heaven by teaching them the true word of God.

Presiding Bishop Emeritus Jeremiah Reed is survived by his spouse of 64 years, Dr. Willie Mae Reed, Des Moines, IA; children, Jerry Lewis Reed, Wilnetta (Craig) May, Tamara Alise Reed and Bishop Dwight Anthony Reed, Pastor, Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Jermaine LaSean (Dominica) Reed, Kissimmee, FL; Panacha LaShay (Grant IV) Townsell, Des Moines, IA; Dameon Reed, Indianapolis, IN; Monica Alise Teague, Des Moines, IA; Erica (Fred Jones) Reed, Des Moines, IA; Veronica Ann Reed, Des Moines, IA; Tiffany Shante May, Houston, TX; Jeremiah Brian (Melinda) May, Houston, TX; Teodora Reed, Dallas, TX; Jasmine Marie (Terrence G.)
