Listen to Obituary

Wayne L. Caudle, 74, of Winterset, left this world peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Wayne was born on June 25, 1951, in Winterset, Iowa, to Philip and Shirley (Day) Caudle. He was raised in rural Madison County, where he spent his youth on the farm; memories he cherished and shared often through stories. The farm life instilled in him a strong work ethic, but Wayne also had a wild, ornery side known for shooting pool, grabbing gears, and laying rubber.

After graduating from Winterset High School, Class of 1969, Wayne married and had two children. He began driving ready-mix trucks, which led to a career in concrete pumping. Over 15 years in the industry, Wayne’s dedication and skill left a legacy; one that was passed on to his son, son-in-law, and grandson. Outside of pumping, Wayne could be found driving rock trucks, hauling over the road, or during harvest, he would drive for “the farmer”.

Wayne's spirited and wild lifestyle eventually led him to a life in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was a turning point that changed and saved his life. He fully embraced the program and became a mentor and friend to people across the country. In his nearly 39 years of sobriety, Wayne touched countless lives. His unwavering commitment and generosity earned him the nickname “The Legend” in many AA circles. He was always ready to help anyone who reached out.

When not involved with AA, Wayne enjoyed shooting pool, riding his motorcycle, and gathering with friends for breakfast or coffee. Though he traveled often, his heart always belonged in Winterset.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother and brother, Larry Caudle.

He is survived by his son, Jeremy Caudle (April) and grandsons, AJ Pagano and Michael Gabbard, all of Newton; and daughter, Candice Tracy (Shawn) and grandsons, Josiah and Wesley Tracy all of Whitesboro, TX. He is also survived by his brother, Dean Caudle of Van Meter; sister, Sheila Caudle of Lamoni; and his close cousin, Penny Brown of Winterset.
