Walter L. “Walt” Manning, Jr., 78, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Walt was born on August 1, 1947, in Des Moines to Dorothea and Walter Manning, Sr. Known affectionately as “Jr.” by many, Walt’s life was marked by his love of sports, his generous spirit, and his gift for connecting with people from all walks of life.
A talented athlete, Walt was an outstanding pitcher for the Van Meter High School baseball team—known for his sharp curve ball and for pitching nearly every game. While still in high school, he also played for the Waukee town team. After graduation, he continued to share his love of the game by coaching Little League teams in Van Meter and Saydel.
Beyond baseball, Walt enjoyed fishing and playing pool, where his skill earned him recognition as one of the top five pool players in Des Moines at one time. He remained a passionate sports fan throughout his life—following local high school teams, his grandson’s soccer games, the Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Basketball team, horse racing, and more recently, the WNBA.
Walt devoted his professional life to the printing industry, beginning his career with Meredith Printing shortly after high school and later managing the Iowa State Fair Print Shop. His work ethic was unwavering—he was known for stepping up whenever needed, regardless of the day or hour.
Those who knew Walt will remember his big heart and easy manner. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable way of making everyone feel at ease. Always willing to lend a hand—or the shirt off his back—Walt truly embodied kindness and empathy.
Walt is survived by his daughter, Mindi Wehmeyer, and her husband, Chris; his grandson, Justin Annear; his siblings, Julie Jackson (Fred), Al Manning (Kris), and Corky Edwards (Dale); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dorothea Manning.
