Thong Khammy passed away at his home on Sunday, March 8th, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 9, 1945 in Kenthao, Laos. With a passion for education, he was a language and math teacher in Laos.
For a better life and opportunity for his family, Thong migrated to the United States in 1981 and lived in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1989, he made the decision to move to Des Moines, Iowa to be closer to family and friends. He worked alongside his wife at Methodist Medical Center for 26 years in maintenance. Thong enjoyed traveling and spending his free time with his grandchildren in Iowa and Connecticut, taking each opportunity to teach his grandchildren about Lao traditions. He was also a respected member of the Laos Buddhist Temple, serving as a vice president and treasurer. Thong is loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community.
Thong is survived by his wife, Khamphiane, two daughters: Bounmy (Somkhouan) Vansylalom and Sommaly (Vone) Ounthongdy, five grandchildren: Souvanni and Cody Vansylalom; Tyler, Gabriel (Aleksi), and Madison Ounthongdy; and great granddaughter Nyla Ounthongdy
