Thomas Vernon Simmons, 82, of Winterset, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Creston Specialty Care in Creston, Iowa.
Tom was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1944, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Vernon and Betty (Kinney) Simmons. His father, Vernon, served as a bomber gunner during World War II and died just days before Tom’s birth. Tom developed a deep interest in his father’s life and military service and spent many years extensively researching him and World War II.
Tom worked in the oil business beginning in 1964 and spent many years driving trucks for DX and FS. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting with his family, participating in a dance club, and restoring his 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air. He was also an avid John Wayne fan.
He is survived by his aunt, Donna Kinney of Winthrop, Iowa, as well as several cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Winterset Cemetery.
