Ted Allen Schoonover, age 64, of West Des Moines, IA, passed away on September 9th, 2025, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Ted was a devoted family man, military veteran, and adventurer, passed away leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and love. Born in Des Moines, IA on January 25th, 1961, Ted was the son of Hobart (Bob) and Merrie Lou Schoonover. He was raised in Runnells, IA and attended Southeast Polk Community School District, where he was known for his skill on the wrestling mat.
Ted proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1981 to 2005, including a deployment to Desert Storm. Over the course of his distinguished career, he received numerous accolades, including multiple Medals of Honor, in recognition of his exceptional bravery and dedication. As a 54B Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Specialist and 88M Heavy Vehicle Driver with the 1133rd Transportation Company, and later as Truckmaster for the 1168th Transportation Company, Ted's patriotism ran deep, and his service was defined by his unwavering commitment to both his country and his fellow service members.
Following his military retirement, Ted dedicated himself to public service, taking on roles as a Deputy County Auditor and City Administrator. Committed to lifelong learning, he went on to earn his master's degree from Upper Iowa University in 2015. Ted also served as the Mayor of Red Oak, Iowa-a role he embraced with pride-before relocating to Minnesota to continue his work in auditing. Eventually, he returned to Iowa, where he settled closer to family and continued to serve his community in various capacities.
Ted's love of adventure knew no bounds-whether it was riding roller coasters, skiing, snowboarding, wake surfing, jet skiing, camping, or fishing, he was always seeking the next thrill. He cherished time spent at the beach, having fun in the sun, attending concerts, traveling, watching the Packers, and playing card and board games. But more than anything, Ted adored being with his family. He loved the thrill of having his family experiencing his hobbies and adventures alongside him. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he found immense joy in being called Papa/Pop-Pop, often spoiling them with little treats and endless affection.
Ted's love story began in high school, where he met the true love of his life, Melinda (Mindy) Nystrom. Although life took them on separate paths for a time, they later reunited and married on December 3rd, 2022, solidifying a bond that would last a lifetime.
Known to many as a man of few words, those who truly knew Ted understood his quick wit and playful humor. He had a unique ability to brighten any room, often with a joke or a smile that was contagious. His loyalty and support were unshakable, always offering tough love when needed, but with a heart full of encouragement and care.
Ted will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His spirit, laughter, and genuine kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. To know Ted was to love him-he was a man whose joy was found in the simplest of moments and whose love for his family was boundless.
