Sue Ann Hagedorn passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Walnut Ridge care center at the age of 80. Sue was born on December 3, 1945, in Ottumwa, Iowa and was raised by her mother, Mary (Burke) Klootwyk, and stepfather, Lester Klootwyk.

In 1965, Sue married the love of her life, Dennis Hagedorn, and together they recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Sue and Denny raised four children in Des Moines, and shared a steadfast Catholic faith that guided their lives. Family was always Sue’s priority, and she enjoyed hosting many Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter gatherings. She enjoyed cooking and baking for a crowd, and took pride in her beautifully decorated home.

Sue especially treasured time with her grandchildren. She lovingly cared for them and took joy in having a house full of family. She was happiest with a warm cat curled on her lap, surrounded by the people she loved. A kind and gentle soul, Sue’s love for her family was unwavering and unconditional. She was a natural storyteller who enjoyed reminiscing about her life, and she had a fun-loving, ornery streak—she loved to tease, joke, and play, remaining a kid at heart throughout her life.

For more than 20 years, Sue worked in Human Resources at Principal Financial Group. After retiring in 2003, she remained close with her “work family” for many years. Sue and Denny made their home in Urbandale for many years before moving to CopperWood in Ankeny in 2024, and later to Walnut Ridge in Clive.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Jon, David and Michael Farrington; sister Mary Kay Jensen; sisters-in-law Sandy Farrington and Arleen Farrington; and brothers-in-law Lawrence Hagedorn and Gene Jensen.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Dennis Hagedorn; their children Michael (Lisa) Hagedorn of Leawood, Kansas, Kristine (Dan) Koster of Van Meter, Iowa, Brian (Kim) Hagedorn of Ankeny, Iowa, and Jill (Rob) Godfredsen of Urbandale, Iowa; their grandchildren Drew Hagedorn, Kristina Hagedorn, Cole Hagedorn, Natalie Hagedorn, Bryon Koster, Owen Koster, Ben Koster, Emily Hagedorn, Grace Hagedorn, Kara Hagedorn, Katie Godfredsen, Anna Godfredsen, and Megan (Mike) Harryman. She is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Judy Farrington, Elaine Farrington, Pat & Marcia Hagedorn, Roger & Debbie Hagedorn, and Pam Hagedorn, as well as many caring nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Visitation will be Monday, July 6th from 5:00-7:00PM at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale, Iowa, with a rosary at 7:00PM. Sue’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 7th at 11:30AM at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon at St. Pius immediately following the funeral Mass. Afterward, the burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

The family would like to extend gratitude to the compassionate staff at CopperWood and Walnut Ridge, who helped care for Sue in the last years of her life. They loved Sue like she was their own mother, and the kindness, love, and care given to her, Denny, and our family will not be forgotten. A special thank you, as well, to the caregivers of Hospice of the Midwest. They provided gentle comfort and dignity to Sue in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Sue’s honor to Hospice of the Midwest, or donations to Walnut Ridge and the Des Moines Animal Rescue League.
