Her early education began in Ottumwa, Iowa, and in 1942, she transferred to Bayard Consolidated School, where she later graduated from high school. Shirley went on to pursue nursing, earning her Registered Nurse degree from the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing at Drake University.
On September 9, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Larry Lee Harvey at the Bayard Methodist Church. Together, they welcomed two daughters, Debra and Karen. Shirley served many roles at Dallas County Hospital including day supervisor, night relief supervisor, and Director of Quality Improvement and Infection Control.
Outside of her work, Shirley enjoyed many hobbies including cross-stitch, embroidery, reading, traveling, and shopping. She was a dedicated Hallmark collector. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, grandchildren, and eventually great-grandchildren.
