Shirley Jeanne Daugherty, 89, passed away peacefully at Wesley on Grand Des Moines, Iowa, on December 17, 2025.
Shirley was born on April 13, 1936, in Van Meter, Iowa, to Virgil & Ina (Cushing) Allen. Shirley graduated from Waukee High School, where she met her first husband, Jerry M. Hibbs. While raising her family, she operated S&I Cafe in Van Meter, and managed Hillcrest Country Club in Adel.
Shirley married Frances Edward Daugherty on January 7, 1977. Always seeking warming weather, they moved from Iowa to Salem, Missouri, and finally Mission, Texas. After Francis’ death in 2007, Shirley moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where she lived with her daughter Jeanne. Longing to return to Iowa winters (in other words, due to health concerns), Shirley and Jeanne moved to Waukee in September 2024 to be closer to family.
Everyone will remember Shirley’s love of, and proficiency at, playing cards with her family. (The possibility of cheating will be a topic of discussion for generations to come!)
Shirley is survived by her children, Jeanne Hendon, Michael (Mary Sue) Hibbs, and Steven (Opal) Hibbs; grandchildren Gregory Hibbs, Margaret Maggie (Tyler) Hibbs-Redenbaugh, and Lance Hibbs; great grandson Torben Redenbaugh, sister-in-law Lorrie (Allen) Haver, and nephew David Allen.
Shirley is preceded by her husband, Francis Daugherty; her parents, Virgil & Ina Allen; brother, Merlyn Allen, and niece, Kathy Grein.
A graveside service will be held at the Booneville Cemetery on Friday, April 24th at 10:30 a.m. (Shirley hated the cold!)
Special thanks to the Staff at Wesley on Grand, and Wesley Life Hospice, for their loving care of Mom in her final days.
