Ronald Gordon Cooper of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on March 10, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on August 7, 1942, in Knoxville, Iowa, Ron lived most of his younger years around the greater Des Moines area, attending high school in Indianola.
A proud and dedicated military serviceman, Ron spent much of his life in service to his country. In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served active duty, including a tour in Vietnam. In 1974, he continued his commitment with the Iowa Air National Guard, working as a life support specialist until he retired as Senior Master Sergeant in 1994. His lifetime of service to his country and community reflects his unyielding dedication. It was through his military travels that he met his wife Sharon, who he was married to for over 50 years.
Ron’s personal life was marked by a love for spending time with family, friends and enjoying the outdoors. He spent many memorable moments at the family cabin on the Des Moines River relaxing and fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards and bowling in a league. After his retirement, Ron enjoyed working in the yard and was passionate about feeding the birds, squirrels and even an occasional neighborhood cat. He and Sharon traveled frequently, staying at casinos, visiting their children and grandchildren, and making countless cherished memories along the way.
Ron is survived by his children Cephus Cooper-Payne (Lisa) and Doris Lourance (Brian) of Troy, Missouri; Misty Todd (Dan) of Louisiana, Missouri and Randy Cooper (Emily) of Ankeny, Iowa, along with his brother Denny Cooper (Melody) and sister Connie Boucher. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and June Cooper, and his beloved wife, Sharon Cooper.
Ron will be remembered for his love and loyalty for family, always making sure they knew he loved them. He was a proud veteran with an unwavering commitment to the military. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Services will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 with a visitation at Caldwell Parish Funeral Home in Adel, Iowa from 9:00-10:30 am. A burial service will follow at 11:00 am at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Honor Flight Network in Ron's memory.
