Bob was born on November 10, 1935, in Pontiac, Illinois, the son of James and Violet (Randolph) Muir. He attended Odell High School in Odell, Illinois, graduating with the class of 1954.

On June 29, 1958, Bob married the love of his life, Joan Anderson, in Wilmington, Illinois. Together, they were blessed with four children: John, Ken, Sara, and Bobby. He worked for General Electric in Bloomington, Illinois, and Caterpillar in Joliet, Illinois. In the spring of 1960, the family moved to their farm in Dawson, Iowa.

Bob was a lifelong member of the Masons and a proud member of the Perry Elks Lodge #407 for 40 years, earning lifetime membership. He served on the Perry Community School Board - holding the office of President during several of those years - and was also the Mayor of Dawson in the 1970s. Bob and Joan enjoyed traveling, with favorite destinations including California, Texas, and Calgary. He was a dedicated farmer who especially loved spending time around his farm pond. Bob enjoyed visiting with friends and was very proud of his family.
