Richard E. Kelley, 81, an accomplished Iowa painter whose work became a lasting part of the state's artistic landscape, died on February 12, 2026, in Des Moines.

Born April 19, 1944, in Davenport, Iowa, Richard devoted his life to the discipline and joy of painting. He earned his B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1967 and completed his M.F.A. at the University of Cincinnati in 1969. After graduate school, he returned to Iowa, where he became a respected instructor at the Des Moines Art Center beginning in 1973. During his time as an instructor, he guided students with a quiet steadiness, a sharp eye, and a deep belief in the power of abstract expression.

His belief in the power of art was constant throughout his life. Richard's paintings were known for their emotional depth, layered surfaces, and thoughtful use of color. His work was exhibited widely throughout the Midwest and beyond, including solo and group shows at Steven Vail Fine Arts, Percival Galleries, Olson-Larsen Galleries, Moberg Gallery, and the Des Moines Art Center. His paintings are represented in several significant permanent collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Des Moines Art Center, and numerous private and corporate collections.

Though he lived a private life and had no known surviving family, Richard leaves behind a legacy through his art, his students, and the many viewers who found meaning in his work. His paintings remain as quiet, enduring testaments to a life spent in pursuit of form, color, and expression.

Per Richard's request, those wishing to honor his memory may consider supporting a local arts organization or museum.
