Paul Gertsch

Paul Henry Gertsch, 62, of Shannon City, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026 at Accura HealthCare in Creston, Iowa.

Paul was born on December 4, 1963, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Von and Elaine (Arndt) Gertsch. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Grace Lutheran Church and later confirmed in his faith at Peace Lutheran Church. He graduated from Monroe Public School in 1982.

Among Paul’s greatest accomplishments were serving his country in the United States Air Force and becoming a Lifetime Member of the American Legion. His service was an important part of who he was, reflecting his dedication, pride, and commitment. Paul lived a full life with many interests that brought him joy, including hunting, boating, tractor pulling, antique cars, biking, and trucking. He enjoyed the open road, the stories that came with it, and the connections he made along the way.

While he struggled with physical health ailments for many years, he maintained a sense of never-wavering optimism. We take great pride in knowing Paul is restored to his full health and enjoying all life’s pleasures he once was healthy enough to partake in.

Paul is survived by Sumithra Claire Lilienthal, (Dylan and Ella Lilienthal), Kalpit Wemhoff, and Vijay Wemhoff; his sisters, Vonnie (Terry) Peace, Debbie (Larry) Donoghue, and Pam Gertsch; his very good friends who provided him loving care at the end of his life; Tasha Picard, Brady Barber (Presley, Cameron, Hope); as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and others whom he loved deeply and was loved by.

He will be remembered with love by those whose lives he touched and whose memories of him will continue to be cherished.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Von and Elaine (Arndt) Gertsch; maternal grandparents, Herbert and Meta Arndt; paternal grandparents, Paul and Claire (Dress) Gertsch; cousin, Dale Gertsch; and other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Celebration of Paul’s Life will be held from 4pm- 8pm, Saturday, August 1, 2026 at the Monroe Tavern Party Room in Monroe, Nebraska.

Burial will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 12:30pm, Thursday, July 30, 2026.
