Norma M. Cornick

July 18, 1916 — January 15, 2011

Norma Madeline Strawn Cornick was born July 18, 1916 to Nellie and Jahu M. Strawn near St. Charles, Iowa. At the young age of three, Norma and her family moved from St. Charles to Indianola, Iowa. She graduated from Indianola High School and later from Simpson College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was a member of Theta Upsilon Sorority and Sigma Gamma Rho (a literary society). After graduation, Norma got a job teaching in Carlisle. The following year she taught in Mount Union, Iowa, and this is where she met her husband, Gerald Cornick. She continued to work in Mount Union for three years before they were married on May 3, 1941 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. When Gerald was called upon to serve his country during World War II, Norma went with him and worked in the Commissary Office on the base. Following his honorable discharge Gerald obtained a degree from Chillicothe Business College. After college, he worked for a bank in Winfield, Iowa before taking a job with Union State Bank and moving to Winterset in 1954. While living in Winterset that first year there was no job to be had, so Norma taught a year in Lorimor. A position in Winterset opened the following year, and Norma ended up teaching English and Commerce at Winterset High School. After 39 years of teaching, Norma retired in May 1983. Gerald passed away the following year on May 3, 1984. After retirement Norma kept herself busy with her community involvement. She was a member of The Society of Mayflower Descendants; Winterset Legion Auxiliary; 500 Club; the First United Presbyterian Church, and the Retired Teacher’s Association. On Saturday afternoon, January 15, 2011, Norma died peacefully at Winterset Care Center South. She lived 94 years, 5 months, and 28 days. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
