Merle was born November 5, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Glen and Mary (Sowder) Mercer. He was a 1957 graduate of Winterset High School and was a member of the Winterset Alumni Association. He was active in many school activities including, sports and class plays and was junior class president and co-captain of the football team. He also served in the Air National Guard for several years and attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Parsons College in Fairfield where he took general studies and participated in football. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew. During his working career he worked general construction off and on for several years. He also worked in tool sales for Ace Air Tools in Des Moines and most recently at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Winterset. Survivors include a sister, Lillian Williams and husband, Harold of Indianola; a brother, Carl Mercer of Winterset; one nephew; one niece; five great nieces and two great nephews. Winterset Cemetery, Winterset, Iowa Visitation: Noon - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. August 24, 2005 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday August 25, 2005 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare Memorial: Memorial contributions may be directed to the Merle Mercer Memorial.
