Mary Petro, a beacon of kindness and warmth, graced this world from August 25, 1954, until her peaceful passing on May 28, 2025. Born in Saint Joseph, Missouri, Mary carried the spirit of her roots with her, no matter where life led her.
A devoted daughter of John and Wanda Miller, she grew into a remarkable woman known for her welcoming nature and contagious smile. Mary graduated from Winterset Community Schools in 1972. Her career was as varied and vibrant as her personality; she wore many hats throughout her life, embracing the roles of Certified Nursing Assistant and a beloved baker at Casey's, where for fifteen years, she brought joy to the mornings with her delectable doughnuts.
Mary’s greatest love, however, was her family. With unwavering devotion, she cherished each moment spent with her children, Adam Petro and his wife Diana, and Tammy Petro and her husband Shawn Tenbrink. Her grandchildren, Garrett and Colt, were her pride and joy—endless afternoons filled with laughter and a seemingly infinite supply of treats from her famous snack drawer are treasured memories they hold dear.
The aroma of banana bread wafting through her home became a trademark of her thoughtfulness; she generously shared her love through baking, especially gifting this delight to newcomers in town—a beautiful gesture reflecting her kind and welcoming spirit. Mary never met a stranger; her kindness transcended barriers, making friends wherever she wandered.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Lealand Petro, who she lost in 2009, and her son, Todd Petro. Mary's absence will also be felt profoundly by her siblings: sisters Fran Evans and her husband Ed, Johnnie Lourens and her husband Darrell, Alice Branson, and brother Lee Roy Miller and his wife Marie. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Matt Lee Miller, and sisters Patsy Myer and Kay Lull, as well as her aunt, Helen Stout.
In her life, Mary touched the hearts of many, leaving behind an enduring legacy of love, empathy, and culinary delights. Her proudest accomplishment may have been the countless baked goods that brightened the lives of those in her community, for she understood the simple joy that food can bring to relationships.
Friends and family may gather to celebrate Mary's life during visitation on May 31, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home-Adel Chapel, located at 735 South 14th Street, Adel, IA 50003.
Mary Petro leaves behind an indelible mark—her joyous laughter and generous spirit will echo in the hearts of those she loved. As we remember her today, may we all strive to embody the kindness she so effortlessly bestowed upon the world.
