Mary C. Ockerman, a vibrant and nurturing soul, was born on August 26, 1945, in Mason City, Iowa, and she gracefully departed this world on May 22, 2025, in Adel, Iowa, following a long-fought battle with cancer. Mary was a beacon of warmth and compassion, known for her adventurous spirit and a heart that embraced all those who crossed her path.
A dedicated educator by profession, Mary made her mark as a beloved preschool teacher, influencing the lives of many young learners with her kindness and patience. Her career spanned various roles, including Hairdresser at Adel Acres, EMT/Paramedic for Dallas County Ambulance, Nursing Assistant for Dr. Ron McHose, and receptionist for Dr. Charles Varcoe, OD. At the age of 42, Mary embarked on her journey as a paramedic, serving her community with dedication and passion. She was particularly proud of her work training others and instilling lifesaving skills in countless individuals through CPR, EMT, and First Responder classes at DMACC.
Mary’s life was rich with experiences, as she traveled extensively, exploring the beauty of Ireland, Germany, and Europe three times, along with embarking on myriad cruises. Her thirst for adventure was exemplified even at 75, when she boldly embraced skydiving, truly epitomizing the essence of living life to its fullest.
Her interests were diverse and meaningful; she was an active member of the Adel Women's Club, the Red Hatters Society, and the Sweet Corn Committee, along with contributing her time and enthusiasm to the South Dallas Little League as a Den Mother. Her passion for community service was unparalleled, reflected in both her professional endeavors and volunteer work.
Mary's legacy of love and connection continues through those she leaves behind. She is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Ockerman; her children, Jeffrey (Angie) Ockerman and daughter-in-law Shari Colthrup from Idaho; and her cherished grandchildren: Katie, Kyle Lee, Tessa (Jason) from Idaho, and Scott, Stephanie (Kris), Austin, Kenzie (Casey), and David from Iowa, along with the joy of 20 great-grandchildren. She was the loving sister of Connie (Tim) Cox and Nancy Ouverson, and she leaves numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who were touched by her indomitable spirit.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved son, David Michael Ockerman, as well as her parents, Harry and Bette Ginkens, and her in-laws, Bob and Louise Ockerman, each of whom played a significant role in shaping the loving, compassionate individual she became.
