Mark Zimmerman (68) passed away on June 24, 2026. Visitation will be held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory (8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale) on July 11, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m.
Mark was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he graduated from Marshalltown High School. Following graduation, he attended DMACC, where he studied Respiratory Therapy. While attending college, Mark worked at Walgreens. After completing his education, he accepted a position with the Pulmonary Group at Mercy Medical Center in downtown Des Moines. At the same time, he also accepted a position with an airline based in Kansas City.
Mark was deeply dedicated to his patients and passionate about his work. He worked at Mercy for 43 years while also holding other positions throughout his career. His strong work ethic and commitment to helping others were evident in everything he did.
Mark loved to travel the world, experiencing different cultures and cuisines wherever he went. He also enjoyed visiting the Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market every Saturday. He cheered on the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes, attended festivals and community events, and especially looked forward to Oktoberfest each year, where he proudly dressed in traditional lederhosen.
Mark had a deep appreciation for the arts and enjoyed attending art festivals and outdoor concerts. He was an outgoing person who never met a stranger. He will be remembered for his kindness, genuine spirit, quick wit, sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to the people in his life.
He is survived by his sister, Cindy (Edwin) Gay; his nephew, Aaron (Courtney) Gay and their children, Bentley, Weston, and Harper; his brother-in-law, Nate Wolf; his nephew, Shem Barger and his children, Caleb, Noah, and Kaylee; his niece, Vanessa (Al) Hageman, and their children, Isabella and Bond; great-great niece, Alexandra; his nephews, Luke Barger and Nick Barger; several aunts, uncles, and cousins and his close friend and caregiver, Johnny Dullard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and LaVonne Zimmerman; his sister, Alice Wolf; his grandparents and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
