Marjorie Marie Huston

At the age of 93 years 8 months, Marj made her journey to her eternal home on June 13, 2025. She was born at home near Runnells, Iowa on October 20, 1931, to the parents of Gladyce and Charley Miller. She attended a one room schoolhouse through eighth grade and graduated from East High in 1950.

Marj graduated from cosmetology school and was a cosmetologist for many years. While working as a cosmetologist in Des Moines, she met then married Dalton L. Huston, on November 28, 1953, and from this union three children were born: Dennis, Sherry, and Cindy.

The family moved to Atlantic in 1961 where Marj was a member of the United Methodist Church. She worked as an assistant manager for Walnut Grove Credit Union then later became the manager of the IBM Credit Union in Des Moines. After her retirement from IBM, she and Dal moved back to Atlantic and her sweet, kind and caring spirit led her to volunteer with the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

While in Atlantic, she enjoyed her involvement with the local chapter of Questers, golfing, square dancing and playing pinochle with her friends. In November of 2022, Marj returned to West Des Moines to be near to her family and lived in the Cedar Ridge Village retirement community. She was active meeting many new friends and there developed her passion for Bingo.

She was especially grateful for her three children, her thirteen grandchildren, and her nine great-grandchildren. Marj loved her family and was always eager to go watch their various activities which she did. She had said “If you don’t want me to go, don’t ask.”

Marj will be remembered for her kind and humble spirit, her “concern” for others, her warm and caring personality, sweet smile and sense of humor. She was always up for an adventure as her motto was “Go while you can!” She showed us how to continue living life to the fullest no matter your age when she got back on a horse at age 88, sat on a longhorn steer in Texas at age 89, and got inside a chute to sit on a bucking bull at age 90.

Marj leaves behind Sherry and Dr. Dixon Appel, Cindy and Randy Kool along with grandchildren Mandy Grieme (friend James), Ashlee (Rich) Rogers, Jason (Heidi) Kool, Jeff (Alisa) Kool, Jenna (Mark) Brinlee, Brendan (Shelby) Appel, Kat and (Miles) Taylor and her great-grandchildren Kendra, Baylee, Bridger, Colton, Paisley, Gavin, Stetson, Atlas, Cerina.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and son.

As Marj appreciated the beauty of cut flowers, she wasn’t a big fan of them, so memorial contributions could be made, if desired, to the family for a later designation.

A celebration of Marj’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 27, 2025 at New Hope Church, Adel, Iowa. The family will greet friends during a visitation beginning at 1:00 pm prior to the service. Interment will follow at Canfield Cemetery in Altoona, Iowa. Caldwell Parish Funeral Home in Adel is handling arrangements.
