Late Makario Amuja Joseph Lako, 64, passed away on January 2, 2026, due to liver cancer. He was born on January 1, 1962, in Morsak Village, Lobonok Payam, South Sudan, to Joseph Lako Koro and Josephine Kairsak Yenkeji Wani.
Raised in a devoted Catholic family, Makario lived a life rooted in faith, humility, and service. He attended Primary school in Morsak village, Comboni schools in Khartoum and Juba Day Secondary School before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Alexandria in Egypt, where he was affectionately nicknamed “Senator” for his leadership and qualities.
He began his career as an English teacher in Cairo, Egypt, serving refugee students, and later settled in Des Moines, Iowa, where he worked in manufacturing while actively serving his community. He held leadership roles within the SPLM/A Chapter in Iowa, the Equatoria Community, and the Bari Community of Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Florence Keji Wusong. He is survived by his children, Emmanuel Makario Amuja Joseph Lako and Nancy Makario Amuja Joseph Lako, one granddaughter Keji Lako, and his siblings Hellen Woro Tongun, Emilio Tongun Morris, and Arkangelo Wani Tongun.
Makario will be remembered for his faith, leadership, and lifelong dedication to his family and community.
