It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lonnie Lyle Majerus on August 7, 2025. Lonnie was born on June 16, 1946 in Marne, Iowa to Henry and Dorothy Hansen Majerus and later his beloved step-mother Bessie Lucille Majerus. He grew up in Menlo, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1964. He joined the Navy in January 1965 and was honorably-discharged after 6 years, including 4 years of active duty on the USS Princeton (LPH-5) in Vietnam. After Lonnie and his family moved to Iowa, he graduated from DMACC with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1992, and Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology in 1995.

Lonnie met Barbara when they both worked for the City of Lawndale, CA. He married Barbara Schindler Bomberger Majerus in Tucson, AZ on July 2, 1983.

Lonnie held many positions over his lifetime, but retired from the Iowa Workforce Development Department where he served as an OSHA inspector for 15 years at the time he retired in 2014.

Lonnie was a collector for much of his adult life, including framed artwork, glassware, coins, etc. He was also a member of Pheasants Forever (PF) for many years in Jasper County, serving as Chapter President and raising money for pheasant habitat. In addition, he enjoyed hunting, bowling, and following Iowa and Iowa State football and basketball teams.

Lonnie is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Bessie Majerus; brothers Gerald (who died in infancy), Jimmie, Robert, and Donnie; sisters Lolabelle Miller and Patricia Winchel; brothers-in-law Dean Miller and Robert Schindler, and sister-in-law Julie Schindler Evans along with nephew Kyle Evans.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara; children Kristin (Adrian John) Kruschke of Eden Prairie, MN, Jenna Majerus of Johnston, IA, Stephen (Brianna) Majerus of Bondurant, IA, three grandchildren, Evan Kruschke, and Hunter and Hadley Majerus; sisters Lucille Gravlin (John) of Columbus, NE, Kay Phippen of Guthrie Center, IA, Deborah Bolcar (Bob) of Hartford, IA; brother-in-law Terry Evans (Sharon) of Crossville, TN, and niece Meghan (Brad) Evans Gill of Corinth TX, sisters-in-law Patricia Schindler of Lincoln, NE, with special regard to Barb Majerus along with nephews Shane Majerus of Des Moines and Shawn (Liz) Majerus of Austin, TX Donna Elliott of Fort Adkison, WI, Laura Majerus-Santucci, of Kansas City, MO; niece Carla Grasty (Everett) of Stuart, IA; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, acquaintances; and finally, beloved pets Snicker the dog and Miss Kitty.

Thank you to all who befriended Lonnie and Barbara during their marriage and most especially during Lonnie’s declining health over the past year. Your kindness did not go unnoticed.

A visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Ss John and Paul Catholic Church in Altoona, IA. Inurnment will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA at 12:30 PM, Friday, August 29, 2025. Online condolences may be sent to www.caldwellparrish.com
