Julie Carolyn Kahler

Julie Carolyn Kahler, 78, of West Des Moines, passed away Friday, August 15, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Mary’s Campus in Rochester, Minnesota, surrounded by her family.

Julie was born on February 10, 1947, in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of Dale Frederick and Bernice (Oleskey) Hubbard. On June 10, 1972, Julie was united in marriage to Francis Kahler at Holy Family Catholic Church of Epiphany Parish in Mason City, Iowa. Together, they were blessed with three children: Amy, Mark, and John.

Before she retired, Julie operated an in-home childcare, where she lovingly cared for many children, including all eight of her grandchildren. As a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, she served as a Bible study teacher, sacristan, and eucharistic minister. Her faith was a big part of her life, and she cherished praying the rosary. In addition, Julie enjoyed spending time with friends, watching movies, caring for her two cats, Beau and Theo, and participating in church and social gatherings. She loved the outdoors and going on walks. She especially enjoyed games, whether it was dominoes with her grandchildren, rummy and cribbage with Francis, or weekly game days with her friends, where 500 was a favorite. Above all, Julie cherished her family and friends. Everyone she met held a special place in her heart.

She is survived by her spouse, Francis Kahler; her daughter, Amy (Robert) Seiler and their children, Madison, Megan, and Morgan; her son, John (Ann) Kahler and their children, Henry, Ella, Oliver, Simon, and Jasper; her sister, Ann (Richard) Miller; as well as her brother, Frederick (Cynthia) Hubbard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Bernice Hubbard, and her son, Mark Kahler.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., with a Rosary at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, August 22, 2025, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (7075 Ashworth Rd., West Des Moines). A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2025, also at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
