In Loving Memory of Julie Anne Hannam Conroy

Julie Anne Hannam-Conroy, 68, of Des Moines, passed away on June 23 after a long fight for her health and a brief battle with cancer. Born in January 1958 to Caroline “Jean” (Whalen) Hannam and Robert Dale Hannam, Julie was the second of seven Hannam siblings and grew up in a lively household that shaped her resilience, humor, and immense love for family.

Julie was a devoted mother to Tiffany and John, “her whole heart,” and a proud grandmother who treasured every moment with her grandchildren through John. She also delighted in being a “doggy grandma” to her childless‑by‑choice daughter Tiffany’s beloved dogs. A cherished sister, aunt, and friend, Julie met life’s many curveballs with kindness, humor, and a deep desire to make others feel valued and cared for. She loved simple joys: time with family, a cold Pepsi, anything with a smiley face, meals with her best friend, and the comfort of her cat curled up beside her.

A wake will be held on Sunday, June 28, from 3–5 p.m. at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale. A Funeral Mass will follow on Monday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, to be followed by a luncheon at the church and a private family burial.

Julie held tight to her “hippy born a little too late” spirit and her love of peace signs, tie‑dye, and smiley faces. For the wake, guests are encouraged to wear something that brings them joy and bright colors (especially red or teal, her favorites).

Julie simply asked that after her passing people “smile when you think of me.” Her family invites everyone to come with joy in their hearts, smiles on their faces, and peace in knowing that Julie’s physical suffering has ended and her energy remains with us all. (And yes, her hippy‑dippy genes live on in her woo‑woo daughter Tiffany, who proudly wrote this part.)

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in honor of Julie, a self‑described “crazy cat lady.” She loved cats throughout her life, and her most recent beloved black cat, Harlow, came from the ARL.
