Joyce Marie Calder, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, passed away surrounded by family on February 3rd, 2026. She was born on August 24th, 1939 in Greene County, Iowa as an only child to Emmett and Rachael Finnegan. In 1958 she married Jim Calder, beginning a 63 year marriage marked with love and partnership. Together, they raised six children and created a home filled with warmth, laughter and countless memories.
Joyce was a devoted mother known for her nurturing spirit and quiet strength while being a stay at home mom and raising her six children. Later, Joyce spent 25 years in retail working for JCPenny and Younkers, where she truly enjoyed the social nature of the work and connecting with customers.
She was patient, wise, kindhearted, and deeply understanding, earning the trust and love of all who knew her. Through Jim and Joyce’s kindness and hospitality, many felt they were always welcomed. Hosting family holidays brought Joyce her greatest joy, and those gatherings remain some of the most cherished memories for those she loved.
Joyce was deeply devoted to her faith and an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel, Iowa. An only child who built a meaningful legacy and led her family as its matriarch through faith, courage, and grace. She was beloved by family—a steady, loving presence whose wisdom, faith, and kindness shaped generations.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents Emmett and Rachael; her husband, Jim Calder; and her son-in-law, Rick Tibbetts.
Joyce’s legacy lives on in those she loved. She is survived by her children Terri Drew (Trevor Roach) Bradley Calder, Lori Tibbetts, Julie Calder (Steve Wiederin), Lisa Miller, and Matthew Calder; sister-in-law Kay O’Donnell; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and many extended family and friends who love her dearly.
A visitation will be 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30 A.M, Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel, IA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made out in Joyce's name to St. John’s Catholic Church. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.caldwellparrish.com
