Joan Barbara Alvord

J. Barbara Alvord of Des Moines, IA, passed away Wednesday, December 14 at Scottish Rites, Des Moines, IA. She was born in Waterloo, IA.and earned her Master of Arts degree at University of Northern Iowa. Barb was an English Department Head at East Waterloo High School. She also served as Associate Principal at Ames High School and as Assistant Superintendent of South Tama Schools before moving to Marshalltown to become a Certified Financial Planner. She retired in Des Moines in 1997 as a Marketing Officer with Principal Financial Services a subsidiary of The Principal Financial Group.

Ms. Alvord is survived by her son Kelvin Smith and his wife Marcelle, her grandson Kyle Smith, Amy Smith, and her great grandsons Shea and Hayden, all of Florida, as well as her brother Kent Cohea of California.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Music Academy of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Des Moines, Iowa.
