James Hoss

James Hoss, 84, of Urbandale, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025 at the Deerfield Retirement Community.

Jim was born on October 16, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa to Herbert and Ferne Hoss. He grew up in the Des Moines area, attending North High School and graduated with the class of 1959. Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church in Des Moines. Over the years, he also attended the First Federated Church and the Meredith Drive Reformed Church. It was at the First Baptist Church where he met his future wife, Kathryn Jones. They were united in marriage on August 11, 1962.

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate Barr Bike and Fitness from 1962 until his retirement in 2003. In his retirement years Jim enjoyed family vacations and traveling with Kathryn all over the country. Playing with his grandchildren & great grandchildren was his speciality. Jim had a devout Christian faith and had an impact on nearly everyone he ever met. He lived and exemplified the life of Christ in honesty, generosity, hospitality and kindness.

Jim dedicated himself not only to his business, but also to his family. Barr Bicycle was a true family endeavor. Jim and Kathryn worked alongside their children, grandchildren and nephews.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn; children, David Hoss, Carolyn (Garen) Palmer, Katie (Ryan) Roeth; grandchildren, Sara, Scot, Anna, Ally, Haley, Jamie, and Kristin; great grandchildren, Anna Rose, Aaron James, Isaac James, and Ivy May; brother, Herbert E. Hoss; sister, Mary Kaye (Everett) Smith; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ferne Hoss; and nephew, Chad Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines, 8250 NW 62nd Ave. Johnston, IA. with family greeting friends one hour prior, beginning at 1:00 pm.
