James "Dick" Barry

January 25, 1942 — April 2, 2022

James R. “Dick” Barry, 80, of Adel passed away peacefully on April 2nd. A visitation will be held Thursday, April 7th at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel in Adel, where family will greet friends from 4-7pm. A graveside service will be held at 9:30am Friday, April 8th, at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Dick was born in Creston, moved to Des Moines when he was 16 and graduated from North High. He married Marilyn Coleen Spillers in 1962 and had 3 boys, Richard Allen (deceased at birth), James Michael and Joseph David (Tara) of Urbandale. Dick retired after 32 years at Bridgestone Firestone in Des Moines and became a 32(degree) Mason. Dick’s lifelong passion, besides family, was golfing and daily visits to Anytime Fitness (with an occasional nap). He enjoyed being outside on the course at Hillcrest Country Club, along with socializing throughout the Adel community. His time with his boys and grandkids were some of his favorites. Whether it was golfing with Joe, hunting with Jim or being surprised when the grandkids opened their birthday or Christmas gifts, as he had no idea what they were even though he bought them – he wasn’t much for shopping! He is survived by his son, Joseph (Tara); his 4 grandchildren, Fletcher, Jazmin, Jaden and Braden; brother, Leo (Bev). He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; son, Richard Allen and son, James Michael; sister, Carolyn and companion, Jeanne Crabb. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to Joe . Actually, contributions may be made to Autism Speaks. Online condolences may be left at www.caldwellparrish.com
