Herbert "LeRoy" Benge

Herbert "LeRoy" Benge, age 76, of Winterset, Iowa, passed away on November 29, 2025, at Madison County Health Systems in Winterset. He was born on January 30, 1949, in Patterson, Iowa, the son of Herbert Melvin and Sylvia Maude (Hathaway) Benge.

LeRoy grew up in Madison County and graduated from Winterset High School in 1968. On February 23, 1969, he married the love of his life, Wilma "Sue" McClure, in Winterset. Together they built a life rich in love, family, and unforgettable memories.

LeRoy worked for many years as a welder for Quad States, where he was known for his strong work ethic and skill. He proudly served his country with dignity and respect in the United States Army.

A man of many passions, LeRoy loved to fish, hunt, and dance in Stuart. He enjoyed wrestling, football, working on cars, collecting guns, drawing, and watching westerns. He was an excellent storyteller and took great pride in the many knives and handmade trinkets he created over the years-especially those he gifted at Christmas. LeRoy had a special fondness for his 1977 truck, "Trigger," and he cherished every moment spent with his family. Sue was truly the love of his life, and his fierce devotion to his family was known by all who loved him. He also found joy in portraying Santa Claus during the Christmas season, bringing smiles to many.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Sue; their children: Chad Benge, Tina (Sean) Neuenkirk, Tony (Michele) Benge, and Dusty (Lacy) Benge; grandchildren: Dillon, Kalub, Austin, Colton, Zach, Sharay, Ambre, Montana, Dalton, Raelynn, Lexi, Carter, and Ari; 15 great-grandchildren; his brother, Steve Benge; sister, Lyla (Rick) Dunmire; and his step-father, Harry Petersen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Eljay and Jane Hathaway; and his sister-in-law, Connie Benge.

LeRoy will be remembered for his generous heart, his stories, his talents, and the deep love he had for those closest to him. His legacy will continue in the family he adored.

Memorials are suggested to the family for designation at a future date.

Graveside services with military honors will be held on Friday, December 5th, 2025 at 1:00 pm, at the Winterset Cemetery in Winterset, Iowa.
