Harold Adams, age 92, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, in West Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 13, 1933, in Red Oak, Iowa, and lived a long life marked by charm, kindness and quiet strength. Harold will be remembered for his deep love of people, unfailing politeness, and steady presence in the lives of all who knew him.

Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Adams; his parents, Harry and June Adams; his infant sister, Alice Adams; and his daughter, Donnette Howser.

He is survived by his children: Harry (Connie) Ostiz of Huntington Beach, California; Mary Adams of Des Moines, Iowa; Troy (Mary) Shelley of West Des Moines, Iowa; Elizabeth (Ron) Herring of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Amy Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa. He was a proud grandfather to Matt (Amanda) Ostiz, Justin (Sarah) Ostiz, Greg (Stephanie) Howser, Avery Herring, and Madeline and Elle Johnson. Harold was also a loving great-grandfather to Wesley, Lauren, and Oliver Ostiz.

Harold served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and later used the G.I. Bill to pursue his education. He earned a master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and dedicated his career to education and public service. He worked as a principal in Kellerton, Iowa and administrator in the Glenwood and Woodward Resource Centers where he was admired for his leadership and compassion. Harold believed deeply in the importance of education, with his devotion leaving a lasting impact on countless students, residents and colleagues.

He was also a world-renowned gun dog trainer, known for his skill and tact in working with dogs and their handlers. His reputation in the field earned him respect and admiration from fellow enthusiasts across the globe. While working full-time, Harold and his wife Pat also ran their family business, Doc's Dog Kennel and Hunt Club in Adel, Iowa, from 1986 until 2000, a labor of love that reflected a passion for animals, the outdoors, and building community. Together, they created a place that brought joy to many through family bonds and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel, Iowa. Interment will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Glenwood cemetery in Glenwood, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Adel Public Library.

Harold’s legacy of love, service, and strength lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him, no question – he was the homecoming king of life.
