Gregory Neil Benberg, 79, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away peacefully with family by his side on September 16, 2025.
Greg was born on March 4, 1946. His parents were Fred and Inez Benberg. He grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1965, the same year he entered the United States Army. Greg proudly served three years of active duty before returning home and later reenlisting in the Iowa National Guard in June of 1973.
In 1968, Greg met the love of his life, Mary Lou, and the two were married in May of 1970. Together, they built a life filled with love and family. They welcomed their daughter, Angela, in October 1971, and their son, Shawn, in February 1975.
Greg dedicated much of his life to serving his country. He was deeply proud of his military career and was honored to serve as a Command Sergeant Major from 1988 until his retirement from the National Guard in 2006. After retirement, Greg continued to serve as a civilian in the Iowa National Guard, working as a project manager. Beyond his service, Greg enjoyed golfing, attending Iowa Hawkeye games, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. He rarely missed a dance competition, soccer game, or show choir performance, always cheering them on with pride.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou; daughter Angela Young (Ryan); son Shawn Benberg (Jodi); granddaughter Megan Young; grandsons Austin Benberg (Sarah), Aidan Benberg, and Ashton Benberg; his sister Kristi Barnhill (Denzel); brother-in-law Tim Hills (Susan); and many nieces and nephews.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Inez Benberg, and brother-in-law Dean Hills.
