Former star athlete at Missouri Valley High, Glen ‘Bus’ Steward passed away on March 5th at his home in Windsor Heights, Iowa. Steward, 88, was born on February 21, 1929 in Onawa. Bus graduated from MVHS in 1948 with 13 varsity letters. His senior year he was second team All-State quarterback and earned All-Southwest Iowa in football and basketball. The Big Red went 7-1-1 in football and 22-4 in basketball. He went to Iowa State University on a football scholarship the fall of 1948. He was a two year letterman as a starting defensive back and also played quarterback. After his junior year he was drafted into the Army. During his two year hitch, he married his high school sweetheart Waneta Roberts, daughter of Durward and Lois Roberts in December 1951. Upon discharge, Bus finished his education from Peru (Neb) State Teachers College in 1955. Quarterbacking the football team that fall. Bus started his 30 year teaching and coaching career the fall of ’55 at Horton, Kansas. Other schools included Griswold (IA), Clarinda (IA), Gowrie (IA), Mt. Morris (IL), Eddyville (IA) and the Des Moines Independent School District. He coached football, basketball and baseball at most of the schools. Bus got out of teaching for seven years after Clarinda to sell class rings for Herff Jones and Josten’s jewelry companies. He finished his teaching and coaching career with twenty-two years in the DMISD teaching driver education. Bus coached baseball at East High School for six years where is teams won over seventy percent of their games. Bus was preceded in death by his mother, father, and wife, Waneta. He is survived by son Roger and wife Sue from Independence, Missouri, and daughter Kathy from West Des Moines.
