Gene Allan Schaller, 71, of Clive, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 4, 1955, in West Union, Iowa, to Dave and Arleta (Jellings) Schaller.
Gene earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He went on to build a long and respected career in accounting, working at The State Auditor’s Office and IPERS before retiring from the Multi-State Lottery Association after 25 years of dedicated service.
Throughout his life, Gene had a genuine heart for helping others. He generously gave his time and talents to causes that were meaningful to him, including Meals on Wheels, Make-A-Wish, Hope Missions, and the American Red Cross. He also served as a church treasurer in both Independence, Iowa, and Des Moines. Whether through his career, volunteer work, church, or simply helping those around him, Gene found purpose in making a difference in the lives of others.
One of Gene’s greatest passions was the fire department. He served both on the fire side and as an Iowa Paramedic from 1999 until 2014, retiring as a lieutenant after 15 years of service. Gene treasured the camaraderie of the department and took great pride in training, working, and serving alongside his fellow firefighters and medics. The friendships he formed through the department meant a great deal to him, and he was proud to be part of a team dedicated to protecting and caring for their community. His service as a firefighter and paramedic was a true reflection of the kind of man Gene was—selfless, dependable, compassionate, and always willing to be there when someone needed him.
Above all, Gene cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and an especially wonderful grandfather to Jonah and Eden. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart, and the love, joy, and memories they shared will be treasured forever. Gene’s family was the center of his life, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, service, and quiet strength that will continue through those who knew and loved him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Diana Schaller; his sons, David (Jen) Schaller and Andrew Schaller; his grandchildren, Jonah and Eden; his sister, Metta (Vernon) Beninga; his brother, Steve (Pam) Schaller; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Arleta Schaller; his son, Nathan; his brother, Dennis; and his sister, Wendy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Clive Fire Department (8800 Hickman Road, Urbandale) on September 12, 2026; Visitation at 10:30 with the service starting at 11:00. A luncheon will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hope Missions.
