Florence Jane (Janey) Spangler (n.e. Weeks), 76, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 23, 2026, after her courageous fight against cancer.

Janey’s Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Sportsman Park Lodge in Dawson. Lunch will begin at 12:00 p.m., with a graveside service to follow, weather permitting, at Dallas Township Cemetery in Dawson.

Janey was born February 21, 1950, in Berkeley, CA to Harvey Weeks, Jr. and Joan Weeks (Remley). They lived in several Bay Area communities before moving to Sacramento, CA. They eventually moved to San Diego, where Janey attended Santee High School. She graduated early and in February 1968 married Abe Spangler. They made their home on a farm in Eagle Grove, IA where they raised their two children.

In the early 80’s, Janey became active in the Eagle Grove Fun Runners. She helped pioneer the women’s running movement in Iowa, becoming one of the top distance runners within her age division. She completed five marathons, as well as numerous 10ks, 5ks, and fun runs.

Throughout the years, Janey took classes at Iowa Central Community College and graduated in 1985 with honors. She continued her education at Iowa State University where she graduated in 1988. She then participated in the Amigos de las Americas program, as well as the Peace Corps, which took her to the countries of Costa Rica, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. She continued her education when she entered Mercy School of Nursing and graduated with a BSN in 1994. She then worked as a nurse in various medical settings in both Iowa and Arizona.

In 1993, Janey married Gary Wolfe and moved to Dawson, IA. They spent winters at their second home in Tucson, AZ. They enjoyed traveling and took many trips. You could find them going to car shows, the Iowa State Fair, as well as their favorite - the antique toy shows where Janey was always looking to add to her Tonka toy collection!

Janey’s pride and joy were her flowers. Many mornings she could be found with her cup of coffee in her gazebo enjoying the sights and smells of her garden. She loved quilting and shared her creations with her friends, family, and charities. She enjoyed listening to music and watching movies, both at home and in the theater. Janey’s Catholic faith was also very important to her, especially throughout her cancer journey.

Janey is survived by her husband, Gary Wolfe, daughter, Liz (Gary) Mattson, son, Chuck Spangler, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one niece, and her Shih Tzu, Carly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Joan Weeks, sister, Deborah Tessman, and one nephew.
