Ewa Humphrey

Ewa Maria Humphrey, 49, of Adel, died Friday, September 18, 2026, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, after a long fight with lymphoma.

She was born in Kędzierzyn-Koźle, Poland, and came to the United States at seventeen. She became a citizen, and she made a life here without ever letting go of the one she came from.

Ewa was happiest outside. She built the gardens on her farm in Adel by hand, side by side with her husband, and knew every plant in them. She was devoted to her dogs, who were never far from her feet, and to the animals and land she and her husband kept together. She loved her family fiercely.

She is survived by her husband, Matt; her mother, Maria Kurek, and brothers Filip Kurek and Dominik Kurek, of Poland; her giant schnauzer, Rebel; and much other loving family on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

There will be no funeral. Ewa's life will be celebrated privately by her families here and in Poland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in Ewa's name.
