Dr. Ernesto Barrantes passed away with his family at his side on April 6, 2023 at the age of 89. He was born in Costa Rica on October 25, 1933.
Ernesto studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, where he met his wife, Susana Torioni. They were married in 1958. After graduating and having their first child, they moved to Costa Rica in 1959, where he practiced family medicine before moving the family to the United States in 1966. He completed his residency in Anesthesiology through the University of Texas at Galveston in 1969 and subsequently begin practicing in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ernesto was an Anesthesiologist at Northwest Community hospital in Des Moines and later moved to Lutheran Hospital, where he practiced until he retired in 1998.
He was a voracious reader and would rarely be found without a book in his hands. He enjoyed boating, yard work, and over-watering his wife’s garden in his free time. He provided his family with the best he could and the most memorable adventures.
Dr. Barrantes is preceded in death by his two children, Elsa and Daniel. He is survived by his wife, Susana, daughters Graciela and Carolina, sons Luis and Adrian, and nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of life will be held for family and close friends.
