Edward Joseph Carney

Edward Joseph Carney, 85, of Perry, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – Perry Chapel, 1721 Park Street, Perry, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Perry Bible Church in Perry. Burial will follow at Rippey Cemetery in Rippey, where military honors will be rendered in recognition of Ed’s service to his country.

Ed was born on December 2, 1940, in Polk County, Iowa, the son of Francis and Dorothy (Keller) Carney. He attended Ballard High School, graduating with the Class of 1959. Following high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly and faithfully serving his country. He served as a Private with the 2nd Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton, California, before being honorably discharged in 1963.

On March 25, 1962, Ed was united in marriage to Luella Mae Burrell at North Island in San Diego, California. Together, Ed and Luella built a life centered around family and were blessed with two children, Joseph and Teresa. They shared 64 years of marriage.

For many years, Ed worked for Oscar Mayer in Perry, where he remained until the plant closed. He was a hardworking man who believed in staying busy and making the most of what he had. Ed was also a longtime member of Perry Bible Church. Ed was baptized on September 3, 2000 at Dawson River by Pastor Charles Compton, a long time friend.

Bowling was a big part of Ed’s life and became something the entire family enjoyed together. When Joe and Teresa were young, Ed and Luella bowled in an adult league with their two children as their partners and together, the family won the league. Ed was an accomplished bowler, rolling two perfect 300 games at Kegel East in Perry. One of his proudest bowling accomplishments came when he appeared on Let’s Go Bowling with Jim Zabel. Ed rolled nine strikes in a row and managed to win all of the prize money allocated for the show, a memorable accomplishment, even if the prize money wasn’t quite as impressive as the bowling.

Ed enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially quail and pheasant hunting down south. Many of those hunting trips included his faithful dog, Champ. He was also a natural tinkerer who could rarely sit still for long. He enjoyed working on small engines and later developed a love for woodworking. He was always piddling around with something, fixing what needed fixing or figuring out a way to make something work. If Ed needed a tool he didn’t have, chances were he would simply make one himself. He was hardworking, resourceful and careful with his money, a true penny-pincher who believed in taking care of what he had. Above all else, Ed loved his family. The time they shared and the many memories they made together will forever be held close to their hearts.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Luella Carney of Perry; daughter, Teresa Carney of Perry; son, Joseph Carney and his wife, Edna, of Parrish, Florida; granddaughter, Anne and her husband, Bill Wissman, of Valrico, Florida; three great-grandchildren, Arllea Rose, Everly Grace and Timothy Joseph; sister-in-law, Karen Carney of Maxwell; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Dorothy Carney; and his brother, Robert Carney.
