Doris Anne Weber, 85, of Ankeny, Iowa passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa.
Doris was born at home on the family farm in rural Ringold County, Iowa on September 25, 1937 to Virgil and Waitstill Reynolds. She grew up in Thayer, Iowa along with her three siblings; John, Sharon and Phylis. Doris graduated from Thayer High School in 1955 where she played varsity basketball. When she decided she wanted to be a nurse, she agreed to sell her cherished pony, Trigger, to help pay for nurse's training at Broadlawns School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa.
Doris married Charles Weber in 1959 and they were together for 53 years before Charles's passing in February of 2013. They grew up just a cornfield away from one another, but were not acquainted until a chance meeting when Charles was home from the Army due to the death of his father and Doris delivered treats to the family.
Charles brought many adventures to Doris’s life. The family spent time together riding motorcycles (yes, even Doris!), snowmobiling, camping, boating, and water skiing. They shared many happy times with friends and family at their lake house at Sun Valley Lake in southern Iowa. Doris was famous for cooking individual breakfast-to-order for all of her guests, as well as for her homemade potato salad, mac & cheese, and banana bread.
Nursing and caring for others was a huge part of Doris’s life. She was very proud of the 43 years she spent working at Broadlawns Medical Center and she treasured the lifelong friendships she made there. She was honored to receive The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses in 2012 (after she had retired and then gone back to work).
Another huge part of Doris’s life was her faith. She came to know Christ at an early age and her relationship with God truly defined how she lived each day. She never missed an opportunity to help and serve others. She enjoyed many friendships at Ankeny Baptist Church where she attended services and participated in weekly devotions, the Seniors’ Forever Young group, and the “Bulletin Buddies” group where she helped assemble the weekly church bulletin.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Weber; son, John Weber; brother, John Reynolds; and brother-in-law, Daniel Shepherd. She is survived by her daughter, Kim Weber; granddaughter, Ashley (Michael) Culver; great granddaughters, Laine and Laiken Culver; sisters, Sharon (Dennis) Swigart and Phylis Shepherd; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Ankeny Baptist Church in Ankeny, Iowa. As part of the celebration, the Broadlawns Nurse Honor Guard will pay tribute to Doris at 6:30pm. A live stream will begin at 6:30pm and can be accessed via the Ankeny Baptist Church website.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for designation to one of Doris’s many favorite charities at a later date.
