Donald Eugene Abshire, age 80, was born on July 12, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Donald Lee Abshire and Virginia Ruth (Nester) Abshire. He passed away on October 19, 2026.
On October 28, 1968, Don married Rhonda Bough, beginning a lifelong journey of love, faith, and devotion. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Stephen (Lydia) and Scott (Mary).
Don faithfully served as an employee of the United States Postal Service until his retirement in August 2006.
A man of deep faith and dedication to God, Don served as a faithful elder in the Gospel Assembly Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout the years, he traveled to numerous churches within the fellowship, forming friendships and touching lives wherever he went. His love for God's people was evident in his genuine interest in others and his ability to make everyone feel welcome.
Don was well known for his wonderful sense of humor, his friendly greetings, and his gift for making people smile. He affectionately referred to himself as the "Fellow Shipper," a title that perfectly captured his love for fellowship and his joy in being among God's people. Whether sharing a humorous remark, offering a warm handshake, or simply taking time to visit, Don had a special way of making others feel appreciated.
His desire to grow in the knowledge of God's Word led him to earn an Associate Degree in Theology. His faith was not merely something he spoke about, but something he endeavored to live each day.
Among his greatest earthly blessings was his family. Don is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda; his sons, Stephen (Lydia) and Scott (Mary); his sister, Carol Foster; his brother, Gary Abshire; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly knew him as "Pop-pop." That special name reflected the love and affection shared between Don and the younger generations of his family.
Throughout his life, Don held close to his heart a simple but powerful prayer found in Nehemiah 13:31: "...Remember me, O my God, for good."
These words were more than a favorite Scripture; they expressed the desire of his heart and the goal by which he sought to live his life.
Don will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his devotion to his family, his love for the church, and the laughter and friendship he so freely shared.
Though his earthly journey has ended, the influence of his life, his faith, and his love will continue in the hearts of those who knew him.
