Dona Russell, 72, of Peru, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home on June 23, 2026, surrounded by the place and people she loved most.
Dona was born on July 24, 1953, in Winterset, Iowa to Wano and Dorothy Welch. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1971 and married the love of her life, Don Russell, on December 16, 1972, at the Peru Methodist Church. Together they shared 53 years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and hard work.
Following high school, Dona began her career as a CNA before dedicating more than 30 years of service to the Madison County Sheriff's Office as a 911 dispatcher and jailer. She retired after a career marked by compassion, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to serving her community.
Dona also gave generously of her time outside of work. She served on the board of New Hope Christian Union Church, was a longtime member of the Holliwell Happy Hour Club, and served for several years as the Walnut Township Clerk.
More than anything, Dona cherished her family. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, camping, homesteading, cooking with fresh, organic ingredients, and spending time outdoors. She lovingly cared for her chickens, affectionately known as "her girls." A gifted artist and talented craftswoman, she especially enjoyed painting, home renovation projects, and was known by many as the family's "Mrs. Fix-It." Dona's selfless heart, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Don Russell; her four children, Nate Russell, Tisha (Brad) Gutz, Nick (Jen) Russell, and Clint (Katie) Russell; and her seven beloved grandchildren, Grant, Nora, Owen, Creed, Grace, Lydia and Mack. She is also survived by many extended family members, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wano and Dorothy Welch; Sisters: Sandy Pettit (Welch), Rita Morehead (Welch).
Dona's legacy lives on in the family she loved so deeply, the countless lives she touched through her service, and the kindness, laughter, and unwavering love she shared so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
