Derrick Bell passed away on July 28, 2026, in West Des Moines, Iowa. He was born on June 20, 1988, in Waterloo, Iowa.
Derrick was raised in Waterloo and graduated from East Waterloo High School with the Class of 2006. Following high school, he attended Iowa State University, a school he remained a dedicated fan of throughout his life. He later continued his education at Hawkeye Community College, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Network Administration and Engineering in 2015.
Passionate about technology and always wanting to expand his knowledge, Derrick earned numerous professional certifications throughout his career, including Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), as well as CompTIA Project Management and CompTIA Security certifications. His dedication and expertise in technology opened the door to a successful career.
Derrick began his professional career with Cedar Valley Medical and had been working for Federal Home Loan Bank, where he found a career he truly enjoyed. He valued the work he did and formed many lasting friendships with his coworkers.
He will be remembered as someone whose quiet strength spoke louder than words. Stoic by nature, he had a sharp wit and could effortlessly quote movies at just the right moment, always bringing a smile to those around him. He never met a stranger, making everyone feel welcome with his kindness and genuine spirit.
He embraced life with enthusiasm and adventure, whether he was throwing axes, paddle boarding on the water, or losing himself in great music. He was passionate about all things technology and was always eager to learn about the latest gadgets, innovations, and advancements. Intelligent, funny, and endlessly kind, he had a way of making ordinary moments unforgettable.
One of the greatest joys in his life was his beloved dog, Koda. She was more than a pet-she was his loyal companion, constant sidekick, and faithful friend. Whether they were out exploring, relaxing together, or simply enjoying each other's company, Koda was always by his side. Anyone who knew him knew just how much she meant to him.
More than anything, he will be remembered for the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the lasting impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Though his time with us was far too short, his spirit will live on in the stories we tell, the songs we hear, and the memories we hold close to our hearts.
Derrick is survived by his beloved dog, Koda; his parents, Catherine (Cue) and Marvin Dixon, and Lewis Bell; his sister, Natalie Bell (Andre Tate); and his nieces and nephews, Saniah, Arianna, and Andre "DJ" Tate Jr.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Marvin and Roberta Cue.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home (8201 Hickman Rd. Urbandale, IA 50322). A time of memory sharing will immediately follow from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
