Daniel Glenn Perrine passed unexpectedly on September 9th, 2026 at his home in Polk City, Iowa. Dan was born April 7th, 1950 in Niles Michigan to Beatrice Gillman and Franklyn Perrine. He was raised on the southside of Chicago and graduated from Kelly High School in 1969. Following graduation, he attended Western Illinois University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. Dan was a protector and began his life of service as a grade school crossing guard and later became a lifeguard. He worked various jobs including driving a delivery truck, crew member of a tour boat on lake Michigan and as a painter & construction worker. Dan began his career as a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in 1976.
During his tenure with the agency Dan served on the National Response Team where he responded to large scale Arson and Bombing events including the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He was detailed to Washington D.C. following the events of 9/11. Dan enjoyed sharing his expertise and routinely served as an Instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA, and other venues.
Through his work, Dan made many friends at other Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies. During his career Dan participated in Personal Protection details for several Presidential candidates during campaign season. His favorite being the time he spent on Ronald Reagan’s successful Presidential Campaign and on Reagan’s return visits to Iowa throughout his Presidency. During that campaign, Dan also took on the collateral duty of entertaining Reagan’s dog “Freebo” which earned him the ire of Reagan’s housekeeper. Many of you have probably heard that story.
Dan was fortunate to be assigned to the Des Moines Field Office throughout his career located in the Neal Smith Federal Building where he met his wife Jackie and her sons Steven and Nicholas Blanchard. Dan retired from ATF in 2007 as the Resident Agent in Charge of the Des Moines Field Office. He took great pride in his efforts to secure explosives detection canines for law enforcement agencies throughout Central Iowa. Upon retirement Dan was honored with the Albert Gallatin award, the highest honorary career service award given by the U.S. Treasury.
In his free time Dan enjoyed spending time with his family, his dogs, and his many close friends.
He loved the outdoors, especially Colorado. He was enthusiastic about physical fitness. His hobbies included sailing, hiking, camping, fishing, cycling, riding his motorcycle and playing with his dogs. Dan was regarded as a Jack of all trades and was always learning something new. He enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking and became highly skilled at woodworking including building custom furniture. Dan lived a life of service to his country, his family and friends. Dan was very generous with his knowledge, wisdom and his resources including the most valuable of all…his time.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Bea and Frank; his sister-in-law Kathleen Kulak and nephew Zack Kulak. Dan is survived by his wife Jackie Perrine, sons Steven and Nicholas Blanchard (Flavia) and three grandchildren: Colin, Banks and Charlotte Blanchard. Dan is also survived by his brother Tim Kulak and nephew Matt Kulak.
