He grew up in Guthrie and Dallas Counties, graduating from high school at Washington Township School near Minburn, IA, in the class of 1955. He joined the Naval reserve during high school and then married the love of his life, Verla Jean (Wicks) on June 17, 1956. They were blessed with three children, Daniel, Michelle, and Scott.

But mostly, he loved his family.
