Winterset

Cindy Porter, 68, of Winterset, passed away at Creston Specialty Care on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Cynthia Jo Porter was born on February 25, 1957, in Winterset, Iowa; the daughter of Weaver and Veronica (Roush) Porter.

Cindy lived most of her life in Madison County, Iowa. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1976. Growing up, she enjoyed overnight trail rides, fun shows with the Winterset Saddle Club, and the 4-H Horse Club. She would work in the Saddle Club’s food stand during the County Fair alongside her mom and loved that. Cindy had a great love for horses, especially Cocoa, Mingo and Atoka. She continued to ride horses into adulthood, trail riding with her kids. She never missed a County Fair, and enjoyed watching her nieces and nephews show, and then her own girls, and later, her grandchildren. Her entire family attended the rodeos. Cindy would watch her brother Matt ride, or her daughter and granddaughter barrel racing, or later on her grandsons’ mutton busting or steer riding.

Another great love was Christmas! She would decorate so beautifully. Her Christmas village consisted of over fifty buildings with all the accessories imaginable. They included little people, animals, ponds, mailboxes, streetlights, and much more. It was a gorgeous sight. She also loved making the holiday candies for the family. She also enjoyed scrap booking, crafts, and playing cards.

Cindy loved her family, and cherished friends so deeply. Her fight was long, and she would never give up! She would get an infection, and fight through it. She so wanted to be here for her family. She believed that if you take away one thing-no matter what life deals you-always fight the battle, keep moving, stay strong, and love hard.

Cindy is survived by her children, Angela Garrett Holtry and Rachel (Erik) Miller; her grandchildren, Jesse (Rylee) Holtry, Quentin Holtry, Wyatt (Shai) Miller, Montana (Tyler) Kelley, and Elizabeth Eaton; her great grandchildren, Brynnlea Miller, Walker Holtry, Evelynn Miller, and Jaycee Jo Kelley; her siblings, Matthew (Sandy) Porter, William (Tonja) Porter, Wade (Becky) Porter, Toni (Dan) Waltz; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her life partner, Merril Spellerberg; parents, Weaver and Veronica (Roush) Porter; grandparents, Lee & Leona (Honnold) Porter and James & Blanche (Decker) Roush; granddaughter, Cheyenne Miller; and sibling, Gayle (Henry) Kibbee.
