Berta Lee (Evans) Kordick, of Winterset, Iowa, passed away on December 9, 2025, at the age of 92. Berta was born on April 6, 1933, to Hershal and Beulah Evans in Elk Creek, Missouri. The Evans family later moved to Woodward, Iowa, where Berta graduated from Woodward High School in 1951. She met Charles Kordick, who attended Granger Assumption, and they were married on October 25, 1952, in Granger.
During the Korean War, Charlie was stationed in Arlington, D.C., where Berta worked for the government and held a secret clearance to the Pentagon. A highlight of Berta’s time was watching President Eisenhower’s inaugural parade up close, as well as taking trips to New York City. They welcomed their first child, Charles Michael, in D.C. Sadly, Chuckie passed away at just four weeks old as the family was preparing to return to Iowa after Charlie’s service.
Berta and Charlie moved to Winterset in 1955 and built a life on their farm, where they raised their children. A devoted mother, Berta was deeply involved in her daughters’ piano lessons, 4-H, and various other activities, as well as her sons’ scouting and extracurriculars. She cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and was known for her sense of humor and deep pride in her family. Berta enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, and the many roles of a farm wife. Berta enjoyed vacations with her family. A highlight was Charlie and Berta’s 50th wedding anniversary to Italy. Though primarily a stay-at-home mom, she also worked briefly at the Production Credit Association and later retired from Wells Fargo Operations in 1998.
In 2011, Berta and Charlie were crowned King and Queen of the Covered Bridge Festival. Their dedication to the community was evident as they were named Super Fans of Winterset Schools, attending numerous events in support of their children and grandchildren - continuing even long after their family had graduated. Berta also volunteered at the Madison County Historical Museum and with Meals on Wheels. She was also very involved at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Berta was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Kordick; son, Charles Michael Kordick; parents, Hershal and Beulah Evans; and sisters, Georgia (Donald) Bryant and Della (Bob) Stephenson.
She is survived by her loving children: Bob (Sandy) Kordick, Jim (Julie) Kordick, Teresa Kordick, Dave (Jackie) Kordick, Ron (Deb) Kordick, Mary Kordick, and Mike (Karen) Kordick; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the amazing support and love that mom received from Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Suncrest Hospice and Windsor Manor.
