Alan Bruce Shoemaker, 76, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on June 10, 2026. He was born on August 11, 1949, in Lake City, Iowa, to Bruce and Mavis Shoemaker. Alan was raised on a farm, where he developed a strong work ethic and a lifelong appreciation for rural life. As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball and had a special love for horses, westerns, and anything associated with John Wayne.
On November 2, 2000, Alan married the love of his life, Julia Sammon. Together they shared many wonderful years and built a loving family. He was a proud father and stepfather who cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren: Quentin (Alina), Adam, Kaleb, Kate, Mason, Megan, Jacob, Lukas, Gavin, Sara, and Kaiden. His grandchildren brought him great joy and were among his greatest blessings.
Alan learned the carpentry trade from his father and went on to become a Union Carpenter. Throughout his career, he took pride in his craftsmanship and dedication to his work. He retired from the Union in 2010 at the age of 61. In his free time, Alan enjoyed shooting pool, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. He was known for his hardworking nature, his love of laughter, and the many friendships he built throughout his life.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Mavis Shoemaker; his sisters, Cheri Peterson and Sandy Lanphier; and other beloved family members who welcomed him into eternal rest.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Shoemaker; his children, Peggy (David) Bohall, Brian (Ann) Shoemaker, Chad Shoemaker, and Douglas (Jess) Sammon; his eleven grandchildren; his sister, Vicki (Dan) Meyer; his brother-in-law, Ross; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
Alan will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love for family, and the kindness and friendship he shared with those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
