It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we announce the passing of Reverend Aguek Maboir Chol Chual, a devoted servant of God, a scholar, a community leader, and a loving husband and father. Rev. Aguek departed this life on August 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, public service, and quiet perseverance through adversity.
Cause of Death: Septic Shock.
More specifically, septic shock is a life-threatening medical condition resulting from the body's extreme and dysregulated response to infection, which causes a severe drop in blood pressure and leads to multiple organ failure.
Given his long-standing battle with diabetes and fluctuating blood pressure, along with a diagnosis of kidney failure and recently suffered two heart attacks, this courageous man ultimately succumbed to his illnesses. He tragically passed away on August 2, 2025, at approximately 8:47 AM, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.
Born on January 1, 1979, to the late Maboir Chol Chual and the late Alliei, Rev. Aguek was raised in a family rooted in dignity, integrity, and deep spiritual values. Though his parents preceded him in death, their influence continued to shape his noble character and spiritual devotion.
A Life of Scholarship & Service
Rev. Aguek began his academic journey studying Law at the University of Juba, and later earned a Bachelor of Law degree from Cairo Khartoum University in 2015. His pursuit of truth and justice evolved into a divine calling, and he pursued Religious Theology, becoming an ordained minister committed to serving both God and humanity.
While living in Cairo, Egypt, he selflessly volunteered as a teacher for refugee children—bringing education, hope, and compassion to the displaced. He also served as President of the Juba University Students Association, reflecting his strong leadership and advocacy for others.
A Devoted Minister & Community Leader
After emigrating to the United States on December 16, 2021, Rev. Aguek continued his ministry as a co-preacher at Jerusalem Church of Des Moines, where his sermons resonated deeply with spiritual wisdom and grace.
He was also an active member of the Abyei Ngok Community Association in the United States (ANCAUS), where he worked to preserve culture and support community growth.

Behind his public strength, Rev. Aguek bore private suffering with remarkable resilience. He battled diabetes, endured kidney failure, and survived two heart attacks, all while maintaining his unwavering trust in God and dedication to others.
