Lois Grout

Lois Grout, 93, of Winterset, died Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at Azria Health of Winterset. Lois was born July 6, 1927, in rural Madison County, Iowa to Guy and Frances (Simpson) Handley. She grew up in Madison County and graduated from Winterset High School in 1944. On December 24, 1947, she married Loren Grout. Lois and Loren spent many years in Lorimor, Iowa. She was a homemaker and worked for The Lormorian Newspaper, and was active in her community and church. In 1970, Lois and Loren moved to a farm south of Winterset where she enjoyed a large garden and helped Loren build clocks. She was a wonderful hostess and was well-known for her delicious pies. She also worked at JC Penney in Winterset. She and Loren moved to Winterset in 1990, and spent their winters with family and friends in Arizona. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her children and grandchildren and gatherings with her whole family. Lois is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Ron) Berdine and Gwynn (Jame) Christiansen; seven grandchildren, Mike (Jennifer) Berdine, Matt (Christine) Berdine, Wendy (Joe) Waterbury, Charlie Grout, Ryan Grout, Nathan Hoffman and Kerry (Tom) Ausmus; and eight great grandchildren, Hannah Grout, Whitney Grout, Avary Grout, Ben Ausmus, Sam Ausmus, Alyssa Grout, Thomas Waterbury and William Berdine. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Frances Handley; husband, Loren Grout; son, Gary Grout; and son-in-law, Mike Zeisler. Private funeral arrangements are being handled by Caldwell Parrish Winterset Chapel. Online condolences may be left at www.caldwellparrish.com.
